I spent a few hours last night reading reviews. Not just mine, but the reviews left for other photographers. It started with me checking out the reputation of a photographer I was considering shooting with. Then I clicked on other photographers and I clicked on their reviews and other reviews and it got my wheels turning.
Most people rate photographers on a few similar categories: 1) Value of what they got for their money, 2) Customer service provided by the photographer including their personality,
and 3) The quality of the images they got from the photographer. I don't think I once saw a review saying "she wore amazing outfits," or "she had a funny smell." I did find one bad review that said "when I came to her office she wasn't wearing a shirt," but that was just a weird one and I hardly ever walk around topless so I'm not concerned at all about anyone saying that.
I'm proud of the fact that I have really high reviews. It's tricky to share reviews because there are so many outlets to post reviews. I may be totally unaware of some of the review locations out there. But I'm proud that I don't have a single negative review.
I don't usually push reviews with my clients and my husband is constantly criticizing me for that. The conversation will go like this:
Me: "That bride with the really fun wedding I did last month told me she loves all her images and she's thrilled with me. She's sending me cookies to say thanks."
Him: "Did you ask her to write a review for you?"
Me: "No, but I'm getting cookies."
Him: "Cookies don't matter, reviews do."
Me: "But they're peanut butter...."
So, alas, because cookies don't tell the whole story even in all their peanut buttery goodness, I must ask for reviews. So this blog is me asking you to write one if you've ever loved the work I've done for you. Here are some lovely links to read some of those reviews and for you to leave some yourself.
But this doesn't mean I don't still want cookies.

The Reason I Was Sore All Weekend: An Engagement Session That was Worth the Pain {New Braunfels, Canyon Lake, San Antonio Wedding Photography}
When Liz booked me for her wedding she mentioned that she worked for the Canyon Lake Gorge giving tours. I got super excited imagining all the cool bridal photos we could get. Although she decided not to take the wedding dress down into the gorge, she did decide to take her fiance and make it an unusual engagement session. I'm sure Jacob is grateful for that (I say in my most sarcastic voice).
We sweated our bottoms off walking and climbing through this amazing place! But first I emptied my camera bag of all but the most necessary equipment. And if you know me, you know it was still pretty full. I took down two camera bodies (I always have an extra in case of a malfunction), my 70-200 f 2.8 L, my 24-105 f4 L, three Canon 600 EX-RTs plus a transmitter (because I'm all about lighting), a Cheetah stand and extra batteries of course. It sounds like a lot but it's really the bare minimum. I was limiting myself to two lenses throughout the session (gasp) and I found myself wishing I'd brought my macro along for this shot.

I used the backpack straps on my bag for the first time ever (I usually just wheel it around) and can I just say, ouch! It was actually a pleasant walk into the gorge, but with my gear and the couple carrying their own changes of clothing and shoes, it seemed longer than it should have. The temperature was actually nicer than it could have been. It was in the 90s of course -- this is September in Texas -- but it was only low 90s to start with it. It got higher the later in the morning it got, but we started out okay.
This was my fourth time out to the gorge -- the most recent trip being a catalog shoot for a clothing designer. The previous times were shoots for the art on the wall of the former Schobels Restaurant, which is now River Hofbrau in New Braunfels. I can say with all certainty that even though the gorge is constantly changing, it's still a workout and will always be a workout to get in and out of it.
But the sweat and tears (well maybe it was actually sweat in my eyes and not tears) were worth it.
This couple was a lot of fun to hang out with and I know their wedding next month will be just as exciting (although hopefully not as sweaty).

A Beautiful Evening in a Historic Hotel {San Antonio Wedding Photography}
It was a beautiful day after a week of nasty weather last Saturday. Perfect day for a wedding with Angel and Martin.
What made it even more glorious was the reception in the Historic St. Anthony Hotel in downtown San Antonio. I'd never been there before and you know how much I love the old hotels!
This couple made getting good images easy with their willingness to take the time for photos. Thanks you two for a beautiful day!

Marie and Juan {San Antonio wedding photographer}
I've shot many, many weddings in my time. That kind of comes as part of the package of being married to Lisa--working as her second shooter at weddings, capturing the groomsmen getting ready as well as subtle, fleeting moments has become my forte. But it's a rare event when I get to step up as the main photographer for a wedding. I've been very fortunate that when I do, I have fantastic couples like Marie and Juan to shoot!
Marie and Juan were quite possibly the happiest couple I've ever seen getting married. They didn't let any of the little stresses of the wedding day get to them--they were simply overjoyed to be in the presence of each other! They'd known each other for 7 years, and I could see that comfortable familiarity in their relationship as they joked and played around with each other non-stop.
The ceremony and reception was held at one of our favorite wedding venues in the San Antonio area, The Vineyards at Garden Ridge. The weather was perfect, the flowers decorating the pavilion gorgeous and the mariachi band lifted the festivities up to a whole other level.
They were really good sports about taking photos, agreeing with every silly thing I had them do and coming up with a few creative poses of their own. They readily agreed to let me shoot some infrared wedding photography with them, although they didn't understand what it was at first. Once I showed them the elegant infrared bridal portraits I was getting, like the image above, and the luminous, otherworldly scenes I was capturing, below, they quickly became fans. The Vineyards is just about as perfect a wedding venue to shoot infrared as there can be, with all their lush grapevines and arbors turning a beautiful snow white in the camera.
Congratulations, Marie and Juan! I hope your lives together are every bit as happy as your wedding day! Thank you for letting me be a part of it!

Riverwalk Wedding
I shot my first San Antonio Riverwalk wedding last weekend. Ever since I started shooting weddings I've been waiting for this opportunity. With such a beautiful setting there was no way I could go wrong. The ceremony took place out on a patio overlooking the Riverwalk and then the guests headed inside the hotel for dinner and dancing.
I've gotten to know this bride over the past few months and she's really the genuine deal. She's so sweet and easy-going it's not hard to see what her new husband sees. She was so proud of her bright red shoes, but I must spill the beans -- they weren't very comfortable. She called them 20-minute shoes and let me know when our post-wedding photo shoot was going on 20 minutes. She couldn't wait to kick them off. I shot this image right after our little session when we were walking back around to the hotel (yes, we had to actually leave the hotel and walk across the bridge to get to the stair down to the river). I said "pretend like you're trying to hail a cab," which she did, but then decided to show the shoes and a little leg to get some attention. What a fun day!
I'd like to share more of my favorites from the day but it's so much easier to just direct you to the gallery of my favorites so just click here.
I also would like to put in a plug for the dress maker. The bride literally gave her a picture of two dresses she liked and asked her to combine the things she likes about them into one dress. That's talent! She's a super sweet lady as well and put up a little page of some of my images to display the dress on her website. Take a look at what she has to offer here.
I have another wedding in a couple of weeks so I'm gearing up for that one. It should be just as lovely in beautiful Landa Park here in New Braunfels. Check back later for some of that one!

Going to the chapel....
Meet Nella, one of the sweetest ladies I've met in a long time. Nella found her Prince Charming and will be marrying him this weekend and I'm so honored she asked me to capture her special day. I'm looking forward to this wedding on the Riverwalk and I'm excited about sharing it with you next week. We had a last minute engagement session last night at the Japanese Tea Gardens and got to share the space with no fewer than a dozen other professional photographers shooting bridals, quinceaneras, senior portraits and family portraits. Now I know where all the cool photographers hang out and the secret is out! Not a good place to shoot on a weekend, however, or so I was told by another photographer who made the mistake of scheduling a session there on a Sunday and had to compete with hordes of tourists. But Monday evening was nice and the light was perfect.
On the home front I had the honor of sleeping on a hard floor in NASA with 300 Girl Scouts the other night. My back is still thanking me for that honor. The girls had a blast, however, and will never forget the fun. I, however, would love to forget that floor. As well as the mannequin in a space suit hovering 20 feet above my head as I slept. I kept having visions of Night at the Museum and was horrified by the prospect of looking up only to see him smiling and waving down at me. But since there were no magical tablets from ancient civilizations on display, I was pretty safe. I did return home with bug bites all over my torso and rear end and I'm a bit worried about the possibility that I may have picked up a mutant space bug in my pajamas that will torment me with an incurable rash. Houston, I have a problem.
