It's here. The weekend I've been waiting for all year. The beginning of summer vacation and a much needed break for myself. The only shooting I'll be doing for the next week will be of my own children and possibly a teenager dressed up as a great big mouse. I'm excited to say the least.
I had one last session before the break, however, and I wanted to share it with you. This session was very special to me. These are the children of some good friends of ours and I've gotten to know these kids well over the past 7 years. They're moving out of state in just two shorts weeks and I'm so sad to see them go. I thought this photo was appropriate since they're sort of walking off into the sunset so to speak. I will miss them terribly.
In other studio news, I have made the decision to declare myself as a candidate for certification. Certified Professional Photographers are a rare thing. There are literally hundreds of thousands of photographers all over the country but only a few thousand of them are certified. Being certified means studying and becoming an expert on all the technical details involved in lighting, metering, camera function and even composition. It's a grueling 100 question exam and then a tough review of your work by a board of outstanding certified photographers. I consider it a huge challenge because my memory is getting faulty in my middle age and studying and remembering technical details enough to recall them on a stringent exam is not an appealing thing for me. I'm doing it for myself, however. There's no rule that says I need to be certified to be a successful photographer. It's something I want to do to prove to myself that I can do this. I can be who I want to be.
So with that I'm checking out of here for a week or so. I'll be having a blast at the happiest place on Earth and enjoying my family.

Summer Swim Season
Only one week left of school for the year and we just attended our last end of the year recital. But already, summer is underway with the Landa Park Dolphins. They had their first meet of the year on Saturday and I was happy to finally dive back in so to speak as the team's photographer. I took on the role last year and had a blast documenting the season in photographs.
I got my start in photography while in college and I spent many hours on the sidelines of Aggie football games. I watched the entire '95 season through the lens of my old SLR waiting for the right moment to snap a shot. While others my age were hitting the after game parties I was toiling away in the dark room. I was always so proud to see my shots on the front page of the sports section -- showing the world my vision of the game. Or at least my little neck of the world.
So last year when I had the opportunity to get back into sports photography even as a volunteer, I didn't hesitate. You can follow the Dolphins on my site. They'll be in the clients section under "Dolphins", or course.

Saturday in the park....
No it wasn't the Fourth of July like Chicago sings, but it was a lovely afternoon in Landa Park last weekend. It had rained all day Friday and we were worried the same would happen during Laura and Jamie's wedding. Mother Nature pulled through and gave us a lovely day -- although quite a bit of mud remained from the day before. I'm still scraping the mud off my cute strappy sandals. The ceremony and reception were short but sweet and I was honored to be a part of it. Thanks for the beautiful afternoon!
Sunday was a real treat as well. I got to watch my darling middle child perform her first piano solo at her end of the year recital. She rocked "Take Me Out to the Ball Game." Great job, sweetie! I love end of the year activities. It's crazy all through May, of course with all the dance and music recitals, school show-off sessions, and wrap-up parties. But is also means the beginning of a nice three months of minimal extra-curricular activities. We still have swim team to contend to, but not much else. The kids get to take a breather and hang out. There's just under two more weeks of school here in New Braunfels. Hang on Summer, hang on Disneyworld, we're almost there!
Here's to countless days of snow cones and slippy slides, and amusement parks and fireworks.

Here's to Hard-Earned Breaks
I had a weekend off last weekend. That hasn't happened for months. For the first time in I don't remember when I didn't have a thing to do on a Saturday or Sunday. I got my hair done, did a little shopping, went to a party, then spent Mother's Day at Schlitterbahn -- an excellent day to go being that very few people will take their sweet mommas to a waterpark on her day. We went on all the rides over and over again and got thoroughly chilled to the bone. What fun!
Monday it was back to work, however. When I wasn't trying to make a cranky child happy, I was trying to fit in 5 hours of defensive driving online. Ugh! Remember that nasty little ticket I told you about a few weeks ago? It is behind me and I can now recite the sobering statistics about drunk driving and all the wonderful ways your car can implode on you on the interstate.
This afternoon I was able to get my fingers back into Photoshop shape with some images Jayme shot last night of an aspiring male model. I'm sharing one of our favorites of Shawn that I was able to create with some new plug-ins my darling husband bought me for Mother's Day. Some moms get cheap perfume and flowers, I get camera gear. Oh and that silly New Moon T-shirt he thought it would be so funny to see me wear -- yes, I love to look like a 38-year-old teenager -- go Team Jacob!

Riverwalk Wedding
I shot my first San Antonio Riverwalk wedding last weekend. Ever since I started shooting weddings I've been waiting for this opportunity. With such a beautiful setting there was no way I could go wrong. The ceremony took place out on a patio overlooking the Riverwalk and then the guests headed inside the hotel for dinner and dancing.
I've gotten to know this bride over the past few months and she's really the genuine deal. She's so sweet and easy-going it's not hard to see what her new husband sees. She was so proud of her bright red shoes, but I must spill the beans -- they weren't very comfortable. She called them 20-minute shoes and let me know when our post-wedding photo shoot was going on 20 minutes. She couldn't wait to kick them off. I shot this image right after our little session when we were walking back around to the hotel (yes, we had to actually leave the hotel and walk across the bridge to get to the stair down to the river). I said "pretend like you're trying to hail a cab," which she did, but then decided to show the shoes and a little leg to get some attention. What a fun day!

I also would like to put in a plug for the dress maker. The bride literally gave her a picture of two dresses she liked and asked her to combine the things she likes about them into one dress. That's talent! She's a super sweet lady as well and put up a little page of some of my images to display the dress on her website. Take a look at what she has to offer here.
