I regret that you felt less than welcomed and that it was an unpleasant experience for you and your client. That is not our intention. Please accept my apology.
We have accommodated photographers for 14 years, and we have been inundated with and over-run by photographers who probably just didn't realize the adverse conditions they were creating for our guests. So, as you correctly surmised, we established guidelines to accommodate both our guests and photographers who want to use our grounds and facilities.
The $25 is a nominal fee and is not viewed as a "money-maker". We asked several professional photographers to help us create the guidelines and coupled those with specific areas that needed to be protected for the sake of our guests.
Let me comment on the two specific incidents you had with our staff:
The housekeeper was out of line. Our guiding principle is 'to accommodate both our guests and the photographers using good common sense". That didn't happen. The housekeeper was having a horrible day, but that's another story...
The stairs you were using is the primary entrance to two rooms. Our staff should have checked to see if the rooms were occupied and if the guests were about to use them. If the answers were 'yes', we should have approached you, privately and away from your clients, to work out a plan. We didn't do that.
Monitoring the welfare of our overnight guests is a serious and vital part of our operations. At the same time, we want to respect folks like you who enjoy and utilize photography for employment and art. There is value for everyone in this collaboration. We didn't do well with you but we will do better.
As a token of penance and goodwill, we'll happily refund the $25...or extend a complimentary photography session for you.
If you would like to help by offering suggestions on the guidelines, I'll be glad to listen. The one hour time allotment for a session seemed like it was creating some pressure. I'd be happy to hear your thoughts on that. Contact me directly at the Gruene Mansion Inn.
