Girl Scout cookies. Lisa on Location is officially open for business -- not that I wasn't before as well. But now I've got the army of the Blue Blazers behind me. And why will they be out there spreading my name and singing my praises? Because I gave them Girl Scout cookies. Yes, there was a slide show of my favorite images to wow them with my artistic genius. There were plenty of photo albums to flip through, free cards with my images to take with them. I even served wine to the few who chose to partake in my favorite Shiraz. But I believe I will be remembered fondly as that photographer lady who gave us Girl Scout cookies. They put away 5 boxes in 15 minutes.
There's our picture on the right. I'm the one with the big over-sized scissors about to slice into my favorite velvet maroon Christmas ribbon (bought on clearance sale in January). Those scissors are surprisingly heavy and sharp and the guy next to me was quick to snatch them from my hand as soon as the photo was snapped (must have been expensive too).
It was fun meeting all the Blue Blazers. They're a friendly and personable group. Thanks for coming out everyone! And there's more cookies where those came from!

Lisa on Location's Grand Opening
So I guess I'm officially open for business as of tomorrow. I will be hosting my Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting ceremony tomorrow at 4:30 at the office of the CoC. Of course I've been shooting sessions for more than a year now. I was officially open then too. But now I'm officially official. Or something like that. Whatever, it's a chance to pass out cards, get my picture taken -- for a change -- and serve Girl Scout cookies and sodas because, yes, I still have quite a few boxes of those cookies. What chamber official wouldn't want a Thin Mint and a Diet Coke. They'll be flocking to my party.
I joined the chamber last fall so I technically should have done this at that time, but who has time in between portrait sessions, weddings, and mayhem. My husband has been nagging at me to get it done and he's right. He's the PR person, he should know!
So if you have nothing better to do on a Wednesday afternoon, brave the traffic and the weather and head down to the chamber offices to help me celebrate. I'll give you a Thin Mint!

The Tragedy of Lost Equipment
I thought I'd share a photo taken on a crisp Saturday morning at the park while waiting for my clients to arrive. The fog coming off the water was so lovely -- and disappearing fast as the sun rose above the trees.
The session went well as we took advantage of the fog but about halfway through it my flash diffuser popped off my strobe and rolled into the water. The water is a nice 67 degrees year round, but of course we didn't think to bring a swimsuit -- who would. It cost me about $15 so I didn't sweat it, I just thought I'd order another online when I got home. So I got home and started looking for a replacement and realized it's not so easy. They are unavailable at Amazon and nobody is selling them on Ebay. My Google searches are turning up nothing. There is a much more expensive version of the same thing available however. So I'm thinking my $15 loss is no longer a $15 loss, but maybe a $70-$75 loss. For that I think we'll go swimming. I'll be sending my darling hubby -- a.k.a. Lensboy, a.k.a. Holder of My Reflector, a.k.a. Taker of All That I Dish Out For Him -- to the park later this evening, swimsuit and towel in tote, to fetch my diffuser.

Yearbook Season
I confess I have fallen behind in many areas of my work the past few days. I have been feverishly working on finishing a yearbook for my kids elementary school. I can't seem to stop myself from volunteering for jobs that take up obscene amounts of my time. I've spent quite a few hours at the school, roaming the halls, snapping photos, taking notes and then downloading, editing, cropping, designing etc etc etc.
The photo I'm sharing today is one I took of the outside of the building -- but it's not the one that will go in the yearbook. If you look closely you'll see that this school is actually Mordor Elementary -- not the correct name of our school, but I simply couldn't resist the imagery -- being the big Lord of the Rings fan that I am. I don't know that our sweet principal would appreciate the references to the Dark Lord Sauron's childhood school -- that is if he ever went to elementary school.
Yes, I manage to break away from the real work of organizing children into their grade and class to have a little fun.
I need to get out more.

Family photo time
I've been so busy the past couple of years taking portraits of other people's families that I really haven't had a chance to sit down and do our own. The photos on the walls of our home show my son as a baby and many visitors are baffled as to why I don't have many current portraits -- considering I'm always shooting. I do tend to use my own children as guinea pigs when trying out new lighting techniques, props, poses, and locations so I do have a nice assortment of failed and sometimes surprisingly clever shots that remain on the computer and never make it onto the wall. But now it was time to get us all together and print them up and stick them on the wall.
As you can see, it turned into a free for all. Picture taking is not a serious affair at our house -- and it really shouldn't be -- it should be fun. Flipping through the raw images is pretty entertaining and similar to watching a movie-- funny faces, children pinching and pushing each other, eyes looking everywhere except the camera. I threw together some of my favorites to share here.
I did manage to get some nice images of the children and of all of us together. Take a look if you have the time.
